Conestoga Valley School District Homes for Sale

Conestoga Valley School District

The Conestoga Valley School District is a smaller, high-performing school district serving the communities of East Lampeter Township, Upper Leacock Township, and West Earl Township.  It has a student population of just over 4,200 students. According to state testing scores, 54% of these students are proficient in math and 73% in reading.  It has 1 high school, 1 middle school, and 4 elementary schools. The district offers a gifted program and, at the high school level, Advanced Placement courses.

It has been named one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” several times by the National Association of Music Merchants. The school rating website, Niche.com, gives this district an “A-” rating.  The school district is run by a nine-member school board.  The Conestoga Valley School district truly captures the range of settings found in Lancaster County.

Much of this school district is suburban, but it is not just a suburban school district. Parts of the district touch on Lancaster City and these areas have a much more urban feel.  On the other hand, as the district moves toward New Holland, it becomes much more rural. So if you are looking for a home in this area, whether you like a rural, suburban, or urban home, you will find it in the Conestoga Valley School District.

According to state testing, 65% of these students are proficient in math and 75% in reading.  Fritz has 620 students, of which 57% are proficient in math and 76% in reading. It has a student-teacher ratio of 15:1. Smoketown Elementary has 675 students, of which 45% are proficient in math and 71 in reading.  The student-teacher ratio is 15:1. Leola Elementary serves just over 300 students, with a student-teacher ratio of 13:1. According to state testing, 40% of these students are proficient in math and 60% in reading.

Gerald G. Huesken Middle School

Huesken Middle School, serves the entire school district.  It houses 675 students in grades 7-9, with a student-teacher ratio of 14:1.  Of the students at this school, 45% are proficient in math and 70% are proficient in reading.  The middle school team uses an interdisciplinary approach to education to help the students see the connections between different academic subjects.  Courses include basic core subjects as well as world languages and technology. All students receive a laptop to use during the school year. In addition to its academic offerings, the middle school has a variety of extracurricular activities.  The music department offers band, chorus, and orchestra. There are 13 different athletic teams. Clubs include a community service organization, a gay-straight alliance, a Christian fellowship group, Dungeons & Dragons, a Technology Student Association, and yearbook.  The school also puts on an annual spring play.

Conestoga Valley High School

Conestoga Valley High School recognizes that there is no one path to academic success and strives to meet the needs of all learners.  The school offers a variety of academic choices including traditional classrooms, fully online learning, or a blend of the two. All students receive a laptop for use during the school year.  Students who need academic intervention receive progress monitoring and support. Students with special needs are supported through co-taught classes and with academic support time built into their schedules.  The high school also offers Advanced Placement courses, dual enrollment opportunities at local colleges, or the option of pursuing technical or vocational education at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.  In addition to academics, the high school offers 27 varsity sports and 30 student organizations, including drama and musical theater, competition marching band, jazz band, student council, and a Technology Student Association.

Conestoga Valley is unique in that it provides a virtual distance learning opportunity for any interested families in the Conestoga Valley School District.  For families looking for a homeschool option, this is a wonderful and affordable option. Conestoga Valley provides a complete curriculum including a computer, printer, $20 a month towards a broadband connection, textbooks, and any other necessary materials.  Students maintain regular contact with the teacher via email, phone calls, and face-to-face meetings as necessary. Families can customize their distance learning experience based on their own needs and desires. A full-time online option is possible, but so is a blend of the traditional classroom and online learning.  Students can join in person for field trips, extracurriculars, art and music classes, and other electives. The Conestoga Valley Virtual Academy is a great choice for distance learning because it comes with the solid educational reputation of the Conestoga Valley School District.  Families do not have to wonder whether or not the online option they have chosen is academically sound -- the District has a decades-long track record of great academics.

Conestoga Valley Education Foundation

The Conestoga Valley Education Foundation was formed in 1991 with the goal of encouraging creativity and educational excellence within the school district.  To do so, the Foundation raises money and provides grants to the students, teachers, and administrators to provide opportunities that would not be possible within the confines of the regular school district budget.  Some of the money specifically reserved for technology initiatives within the classroom, to enhance the curriculum and challenge how students think about the tools of tomorrow. Other grants have supported music and art initiatives,  enrichment programs in math, science, literacy, writing, and physical education, and citizenship programs, among others. Students, teachers, and administrators with an idea can write a grant proposal for submission to the Foundation.  Since the Foundation began, it has handed out more than $700,000 in grants. Two of its more prominent fundraisers include an annual Golf Classic and a Derby Day celebration. Others sources of funding include donations from individuals as well as local businesses through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit.
